Adding Nodes to Monitoring

This topic describes how to add nodes to the NetCrunch monitoring setup. It covers accessing the Add Node popup and adding nodes via the Networking and Logical sections. Networking options include adding IP devices, scanning IPv4 subnets, searching AD containers, and importing from a file. Logical options include adding cloud services, composite status nodes, REST receivers, and monitoring probes.

NetCrunch allows you to efficiently add nodes to your monitoring setup through a straightforward interface. Here’s how to add a node to your monitoring:

Accessing the Add Node Popup

  • Locate the Add Button: You will find a blue plus button at the top of the NetCrunch application window. Click on this button to open a pop-up window.

  • Popup Overview: The pop-up window contains several icons, each representing elements you can add to your monitoring setup. To add nodes, focus on the first sections labeled "Device" and "Monitoring"

Device Section

The Device section provides four options for adding nodes:

Add IP Device

  • Purpose: Add a single IP device to your monitoring setup.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Add IP Device icon.
    2. A new window will open, prompting you to enter the device's DNS name or IP address.
    3. Select the appropriate probe that will monitor the node.
    4. Confirm and add the device to your monitoring.

Scan IPv4 Subnets

  • Purpose: Scan and add multiple devices within specified IPv4 subnets.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Scan IPv4 Subnets icon.
    2. A wizard will guide you through the process.
    3. Specify the subnets you want to scan.
    4. Optionally, enable SNMP to filter devices by type.
    5. Complete the wizard to add the detected devices to your monitoring.

Search AD Containers

  • Purpose: Scan Active Directory (AD) containers for servers.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Search AD Containers icon.
    2. Enter the AD container details as prompted.
    3. The scan will identify servers within the specified container.
    4. Add the found servers to your monitoring setup.

Import from File

  • Purpose: Bulk import nodes from a CSV file.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Import from File icon.
    2. Upload a CSV file containing a list of nodes.
    3. The server will process the file and add the listed nodes to your monitoring.

Monitoring Section

Monitoring Target

  • Purpose: Add an element to monitor a new or existing network device. This element can be a service, sensor, monitoring device, or anything else.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Monitoring Target icon.
    2. Search for the desired monitoring target
    3. Follow the wizard steps and add the new device if necessary

Cloud Service

  • Purpose: Add a node representing a particular cloud service.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Cloud Service icon.
    2. Enter the details of the cloud service you wish to monitor.
    3. Confirm and add the cloud service node to your monitoring.

Telemetry Node

  • Purpose: Represent an external service or device for receiving counters and statuses.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the REST Receiver icon.
    2. Enter the details for the external service or device.
    3. Add the REST receiver node to your monitoring.

Monitoring Probe

  • Purpose: Represent a monitoring probe service, typically remote, possibly behind a NAT and firewall, connected through the NetCrunch connection cloud.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Monitoring Probe icon.
    2. Enter the probe details and configuration settings.
    3. Add the monitoring probe node to your monitoring setup.

Other

Network Atlas View

  • Purpose: Add new atlas views such as node group, dashboard, diagram, or map.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Network Atlas View icon.
    2. The wizard window will open
    3. Follow the wizard steps to add the desired type of view

Composite Status

  • Purpose: Create a node that calculates the status of various elements (other nodes, services, sensors).
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Composite Status icon.
    2. Configure the elements and the logic for status calculation.
    3. Add the composite status node to your monitoring.

Monitoring Template

  • Purpose: Create a template for monitoring specific types of devices.
  • How to Use:
    1. Click on the Monitoring Template icon.
    2. Create a new node or select the existing node to create a template from
    3. In monitoring settings, add desired elements and configure them accordingly

Importing from Another Monitoring System

Import from PRTG

  • Purpose: Recreate the devices and monitoring of an existing PRTG installation in the NetCrunch atlas.
  • How to Use:
    1. This route is not in the Add Node popup. Open the popup menu of the NetCrunch Server node under Applications/Server.
    2. Select Import nodes from PRTG.
    3. Supply the PRTG server URL and either credentials or an API key, then follow the wizard.

Devices arrive as nodes with their monitoring engines enabled. See Migrating from PRTG for what transfers automatically and what has to be finished by hand.
