Glossary of Terms
Definitions of the terms used throughout this guide - alert, event, site, composite status, atlas node view and the rest.
Alert
Alert - the condition being watched for action to react to potential danger or get attention.
Site (previously Address Space)
Site is a group of private networks usually behind NAT. When two locations use the same private network address, they create two distinct address spaces.
Atlas Node View
Atlas Node View shows various aspects of the group of nodes in the Network Atlas and consists of multiple pages such as nodes, maps, dashboards, and others.
Cloud Service
Cloud Service represents a single cloud service status and metrics.
Composite Status
Composite Status is an atlas node representing an aggregated state of the group of other status objects. The status depends on group type, which can be critical, redundant, or influential.
Event
Event is a thing that happens or takes place, especially one of importance.
Event Suppression
Event Suppression is the technique of preventing false alarms caused by network intermediate connection failure.
Leading Service
Leading Service is a network service designed to be checked as the only service when the Node is DOWN.
Network Atlas
Network Atlas is a central database containing all your network data. It's organized by the hierarchy of the Atlas Node Views.
Node
Node is a single address network endpoint (interface).
Node Monitoring Template
Node Monitoring Template is a settings node. Its sole purpose is to provide settings to other nodes. When parameters change, they propagate automatically to associated nodes.
Monitoring Provider
Monitoring Provider is a software component responsible for monitoring a part of the Atlas. NetCrunch Server and Monitoring Probe are examples of monitoring providers.
Monitoring Dependencies
Monitoring Dependencies reflect network connections and allow for preventing false alarms and disabling monitoring of unreachable network components.
Monitoring Engine
Monitoring Engine is a software component responsible for the specific type of monitoring.
Monitoring Issues
Monitoring Issue is a problem related to the monitoring process, like missing credentials or improper response from the device.
Monitoring Pack
Monitoring Pack is a group of performance parameters and events monitored and collected for the reports.
Monitoring Sensor
Monitoring Sensor is a software module focused on monitoring a single object, service, or device (web page, file, folder, query, etc.).
Remote Probe
Remote Probe is Monitoring Probe now.
Monitoring Probe
Monitoring Probe is a monitoring agent software installed on a separate machine to increase the monitoring capabilities of the server or monitor a remote location within isolated networks otherwise not accessible by the primary monitoring system. It connects to the parent system.
REST Receiver
REST Receiver is a passive monitored node that only waits for data to be received for it. It doesn't need to know the sender's IP address so that data can come from nodes directly connected to the Internet, such as mobile devices, kiosks, cameras, or hardware sensors.
Threshold
Threshold is the limit or a boundary point that must be exceeded or dropped below to trigger some response action.
Performance Triggers
Performance Trigger generates an event upon the condition set on the performance counter value.
Response Processing Time
Response Processing Time is the estimate of the service's time spent generating the response. It's calculated by subtracting an average PING RTT from the service response time.
